Amy Bakal
Founder and director, Ms. Bakal is the President of La Pagina en La Puerta. Originally from New York City, she has lived here in Cusco Peru since June 2002, with her husband (a Peruvian) and their 2 daughters. Ms. Bakal is a graduate from the University of Colorado, Boulder (American Literature) and has a Master’s in Elementary Education from Hunter College, New York.
As director of the library, Ms. Bakal is responsible for the complete management of the library including administration, marketing, selection of books, the hiring and continual training of teachers, the volunteer program, and most importantly for forming the loving, nurturing, and welcoming environment for the children. Ms. Bakal has created the norms for receiving each child into the library on a daily basis so that they
feel welcome and eager to read. She has developed all three reading programs and trained the teachers in how to implement them successfully with each child. Ms. Bakal’s most favorite undertakings are spending time with the children, reading with them, watching their excitement as they accomplish something new, and teaching them to play some of the games. Ms. Bakal is an unsalaried employee of the library.
Lidris Ninoska Mosquipa Bocangel
Ms. Mosquipa, with the library since July 2008, has proven to be an incredible addition to the library. Searching for a teacher was not easy. Almost twenty prospective teachers with teaching credentials were interviewed. The candidates themselves could not read, write, or communicate – so how could they possibly help the children at La Pagina en La Puerta to accomplish these skills.
